The Saudi Riyal: Currency of the Kingdom

The Saudi Riyal (SAR, ISO 4217) is the official currency of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in use since 1925. It is divided into 100 halalas and issued by the Saudi Central Bank (formerly SAMA). Since 1986, the riyal has been pegged to the US dollar at a fixed rate of 3.75 SAR per USD — one of the most stable currency pegs in the world. This means that while your own currency may fluctuate against the dollar, the SAR/USD rate remains constant, making budget planning straightforward.

Managing Money in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia has an excellent banking infrastructure. ATMs are ubiquitous in airports, malls, hotels, and city centres, accepting Visa and Mastercard universally. Contactless payment is widely accepted thanks to Vision 2030 digital initiatives. Traditional markets (souks) sometimes prefer cash for smaller purchases and bargaining. Currency exchange bureaus (sarrafs) are found at all major airports and shopping centres — rates are competitive but worth comparing before large transactions.

Travel Budget Guide

Saudi Arabia caters to all budgets. A mid-range daily budget runs 300–500 SAR (80–135 USD), covering a 3-star hotel, local restaurant meals, and in-city transport. Local halabi restaurants offer filling meals for 20–60 SAR. Uber and Careem (ride-hailing) are affordable, with city rides rarely exceeding 25–40 SAR. Cultural sites like AlUla, Al-Balad in Jeddah, and Diriyah charge 40–150 SAR entry. Desert excursions and adventure activities range from 500–1,500 SAR per person. Alcohol is prohibited in Saudi Arabia, which offsets many other travel costs. There are no currency import restrictions, but amounts exceeding the equivalent of 60,000 SAR must be declared at customs.
